Sunday afternoon was a slow day at the box office, both matinee shows had started and all patrons were inside the theater. As a patron walked up to my window, the lights began to flicker - but came back on. My supervisor, Melanie screamed "start cutting" as we needed to prepare for 'power outage vouchers.' Five minutes later, the power went out on campus, and Melanie, Gina and myself began cutting and signing over 250 'power outage vouchers.' Our Ted Shawn Theatre is lucky enough to have a generator, and the show was in the middle of intermission during the power outage - so we did not have any complaints! However, in the Doris Duke Theatre, there is no generator and once power is out, the theatre is pitch black. The house manager and production crew waited 20 minutes before realizing the need to cancel the remainder of the show. Each patron who had attended the show in the Doris Duke Theatre received one voucher entitling them to a show during the 2013-2014 season. In addition to hoping we have no more power outages this season, all patrons can chose a complimentary show to see. Although I never wish anything bad to happen at The Pillow, I am grateful I was able to experience how to deal with such crisis.
Fingers crossed for only sunshine!
