I have reached the half way point of my internship, and now have only five weeks left before I pack up and head back to Pittsburgh. Later today I will be meeting with my supervisor to discuss how I have been working and what I can do to improve. Prior to arriving here at Jacob's Pillow, my mentor and professor had three goals for me: 1) Be a team player, 2) Learn to not interrupt others when they are speaking, and 3) Not to take on too many tasks to the point where I become stressed. I personally believe that I have improved on each of these goals, with more room to grow over the next five weeks and my career. Readers,
This post is not relevant to my internship - but it is relevant to my future. Today, July 18, 2013 The U.S. House of Representatives will begin their debate on the nation’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) legislation - this bill could affect the future of the arts, specifically in education. This bill specifically eliminates stand-alone grants for model arts education programs. I believe that by including the arts in elementary education, it can impact a child. Jacob's Pillow also believes in the importance of the arts by offering a FREE Performance every Wednesday - Saturday, 6:15-7pm as part of Inside/Out. Stand up for the Arts! Sunday afternoon was a slow day at the box office, both matinee shows had started and all patrons were inside the theater. As a patron walked up to my window, the lights began to flicker - but came back on. My supervisor, Melanie screamed "start cutting" as we needed to prepare for 'power outage vouchers.' Five minutes later, the power went out on campus, and Melanie, Gina and myself began cutting and signing over 250 'power outage vouchers.' Our Ted Shawn Theatre is lucky enough to have a generator, and the show was in the middle of intermission during the power outage - so we did not have any complaints! However, in the Doris Duke Theatre, there is no generator and once power is out, the theatre is pitch black. The house manager and production crew waited 20 minutes before realizing the need to cancel the remainder of the show. Each patron who had attended the show in the Doris Duke Theatre received one voucher entitling them to a show during the 2013-2014 season. In addition to hoping we have no more power outages this season, all patrons can chose a complimentary show to see. Although I never wish anything bad to happen at The Pillow, I am grateful I was able to experience how to deal with such crisis.
Fingers crossed for only sunshine! One of the marketing department projects this year is to create memories that continue to bring families and kids to Jacob's Pillow.
Last week we had an all male Brazilian hip-hop company, Compagnie Kafig as well as a one-man show from Berlin, LEO performing at The Pillow. After each of the matinee shows, the marketing interns hosted a 'Kids Corner' where kids could try and imitate what they just watched! My show was LEO - LEO uses video projections, creative acrobatic movement, and surprising physical theatre to create an imaginary world. Prior to the ending of the show, I created LEO's basic kitchen with a table and two chairs out of tape. When the children came out of the show they sat on the chairs and did "handstands" on the table. In the picture to the left, I am helping create one of the cats that LEO drew on the chalkboard. We have a few more kids corner activities throughout the season - hope you can join! Saturday evening, July 15th I pulled out my black gala dress from my shopping bag and prepared for the festivities. The gala did not start until 5pm, but I reported to work at 10am. My morning began by updating the 11 bulletin boards around campus and then answering the phones in the box office. At 6pm I chatted with many donors and other gala guests during their cocktail hour as I politely asked them to make there way to the Ted Shawn Theatre for the performances.Once the guests were seated, I waited outside for "bell tickets" - tickets that have not been sold and are released as complimentary tickets for interns and staff members.
Before things got hectic - production interns and artist services interns planned and presented The Pillow Staff with the "Fire & Ice Masquerade" on the Ted Shawn Theatre Stage. It was a fun night outside of the offices getting to know all the interns, staff, and apprentices. We also held a bonfire during the week for interns and staff - roasting marshmallows and enjoying our nights off before the festival begins.
Two weeks into my internship and I can now thoroughly discuss what I do. I am the marketing and ticket services intern - meaning I spend half of my time in the box office, and half of my time in the marketing office.
While in the box office - I answer phone calls, sell and exchange tickets, return messages, and contact patrons who have mailed in gift certificates and vouchers. In addition to ticket sales, I print tickets and invoices to be mailed, and run End of Day which consists of a series of reports and documents for both the Director of Finance, Development, and the Director of Marketing & Communications. I now realize how important it is to keep track of daily credits and debits. While in the marketing office - I work on many different projects, some with due dates, some that can be looked at when down time is available. My current project include: - Designing the opening week flyer and sending it as a pdf email attachment to stores/companies/venues - Learning how to make edits on the website, and then helping make changes throughout the summer - Student Spotlights from the 4 programs here at The School at Jacob's Pillow - Managing The School at Jacob's Pillow facebook page - Research and contacting organizations and publications supporting LBGT for Weekend Out - Tracking review sites - Creating and posting 'Today at the Pillow' signs - Creating and sending informational sheets to local hotels - Cleaning and opening The Welcome Center (also giving tours) - Updating and cleaning the photo drive - Keeping track of everything we do! Festival begins June 19th and I am so excited ! With the festival only two weeks away, the marketing department is determined to get the word out. My job is to keep track of all the restaurants, shops, stores, and visitor centers that agreed to post our marketing material and those that simply could not. In addition to the "yes's" and "no's" I track the exact marketing material being handed out, (for instance which poster is posted, is it the festival 2013, Kafig, or L.E.V.)
